Meth explosion displaces more than 40 from Binghamton apartment building

Binghamton Police say a man cooking meth caused a fire in an apartment building that displaced more than 40 people.
Binghamton (WSYR-TV/NewsChannel34) – Binghamton Police say a man cooking meth caused a fire in an apartment building that displaced more than 40 people.

Police say Daniel Kauchis, 36, was cooking methamphetamine in his third-floor apartment when he triggered a small chemical explosion.

The incident occurred around 11:45 p.m. on Main Street.

The building sustained heavy damage.

Fire Captain Tim Dahulich says originally there was concern that someone might have died in the fire.

"All the tenants as of right now are accounted for. That is why we were here this morning. We had two apartments of occupants that were unaccounted for. We were prepared to do some searching through the rubble of those two apartments but all of the people in those apartments have been positively accounted for," Dahulich told NewsChannel 34.

Kauchis was the only person injured during the incident. He sustained minor burns on his legs, hands, and face.

The Binghamton Press & Sun Bulletin reports that Kauchis was charged with first-degree reckless endangerment and fourth-degree arson. He was taken to the Broome County Correctional Facility.
