Officials have high hopes for newest Oswego County DIRT track

Central Square (WSYR-TV) - A significant project near the Oswego County village of Central Square has just gotten a big boost.

New York state has contributed $2 million to help make the Central New York Raceway Park a reality.

The man who founded DIRT Motorsports has some brand new ideas to supercharge the sport and the local economy at the brand new track that will soon be up. The Central New York Raceway Park includes a half-mile dirt oval, a road course, theater style stadium seating for about 5,000, a NASCAR garage, and a full-service restaurant.

Officials hope the facility will be available year round for snowmobile races, horse racing, and other forms of motorsports.

“We’re not going to run unmuffled,” said CNYRP President Glenn Donnelly. “I was always a proponent of noise control and some of our future racing….it’s really going to surprise some people.”

The track will use state-of-the-art LED lighting, produced by a Baldwinsville company, and drivers will race on a synthetic dirt track that will also be used for horse racing in the off-season.

In addition, it will offer VIP suites and an observation deck, along with a full television and radio studio.

The money from the state will be used to reopen a rest stop in Central Square just off of I-81. The move would give the speedway direct access to the highway.

“You want them to come right off Route 81 right into the facility. The rest of the traffic on Route 11 wouldn't be a major issue because we're open all day. This 81, when we do have major events, yes it will make a big difference,” Donnelly said.

Donnelly noted that the 150-acre facility will make a substantial difference locally for jobs during the construction phase and also once the facility is operational.

Along with racing, Donnelly expects the facility to host trade shows, banquets, corporate meetings, and concerts.
