North Syracuse (WSYR-TV) – State Police say a Cicero man arrested on rape and murder charges after a carjacking on Thursday night at Great Northern Mall was already facing child pornography charges.

State Police charged 29-year-old David Renz of Lakeshore Road with rape, kidnapping, murder in the first degree, and murder in the second degree.

Renz, a former part-time employee at Wegmans, was charged with receiving child pornography and possessing child pornography in 2012.

Police say Renz approached 47-year-old Lori Bresnahan and a child as they were leaving a gymnastic class at Great Northern. They say he bound the woman and then drove to Verplank Road.

Once they were a distance from the mall, he stabbed the woman multiple times.

They say the child escaped the attacker and someone passing by helped her.

According to police Renz then fled into the woods.

The woman was taken to Upstate University Hospital, where she died.

The child is recovering at the hospital.

Police say they don’t think Renz knew his victims.

The US Attorney's office says that Renz was wearing an electronic monitoring bracelet as a result of his child pornography arrest. They say he removed it before the attack, but they weren't sure at which point he did so.

Lori Bresnahan was a librarian at Willow Field Elementary School in the Liverpool school district.

She previously worked at Chestnut Hill and, before that, schools in the Oswego and Syracuse city school districts.

The Liverpool Central School District is providing counseling for students and staff today. Counselors will also be available to staff on Saturday.

She earned her undergraduate degree at SUNY Oswego and her Master's Degree in library science at Syracuse University.

If you were at the mall in the vicinity of CNY Gymnastics at around 8:30 and 9:15 p.m. Thursday night and saw someone acting suspiciously, or if you happened to notice a woman and girl being followed as they headed to their car, State Police want to hear from you. Call them at (315) 455-2922.
