Latham (WSYR-TV) – State Police and law enforcement officers in the Albany area are looking for a man who they want to talk to in connection to the stabbing of a State Trooper.

Police want to talk to 18-year-old Eric Green in connection to the Sunday stabbing of State Trooper Rodney Smith.

Police say they do not know his current address, but Green is connected to the Grand Street area in the city of Albany.

Officials say Smith was approached by an individual who indicated he was new to the area around 3:15 p.m.

As the officer checked his identification, police say the man stabbed the trooper in the neck with a steak knife.

The trooper managed to fend off the assailant, but suffered additional wounds to his neck, face, arms and hands.

The 15-year veteran was rushed to Albany Medical Center where he underwent surgery.

Smith remains in stable condition at Albany Medical Center Hospital and is expected to fully recover, State Police said on Monday.

Anyone with information is asked to call the New York State Police at (518) 473-5164.
