Syracuse (WSYR-TV) – Syracuse Police have arrested a suspect in the armed robbery of a liquor store where the 77-year-old owner was shot in the eye. Police say the suspect was involved in an armed purse snatching the same night.

Police have charged 19-year-old Shireff Williams III with robbery in the first degree, assault in the first degree, and possession of stolen property in that robbery case.

The victim – Thomas Dotterer – not only owns the liquor store, he is also a baseball coach at Christian Brothers Academy and a member of the Syracuse Sports Hall of Fame.

Dotterer was listed in critical, but stable, condition at University Hospital on Thursday.

Police say the robbery happened just before 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at the liquor store located at 1428 North Salina St.

Shop owners in the neighborhood are feeling a little relief that one of the suspects is behind bars.

Alexander Gause owns a business next door. He told NewsChannel 9, “I'm happy one of them was caught, I didn't think anyone would bother someone like him. He's been here for a long time, he knows everyone in the neighborhood.”

Around 6:48 the same night, two women had their purses stolen on Taft Ave. by three suspects, two of whom were armed.

Williams was also charged with two counts of robbery in the second degree in the purse snatching. Deoz Miller-Harris, 18, of Syracuse has already been charged with robbery in the second degree in that case.

Police say they are still looking for another suspect, who they did not name.

Anyone with information is asked to call Syracuse Police at 442-5222.
