Proposal would save billions but eliminate door-to-door mail delivery

A proposal by members of congress could save the U.S. Postal Service billions of dollars but eliminate door-to-door delivery of mail.
Syracuse (WSYR-TV) – A proposal by members of congress could save the U.S. Postal Service billions of dollars but eliminate door-to-door delivery of mail.

A proposal by House Republicans to overhaul the U.S. Postal Service would require everyone to receive mail from a curbside or cluster box.

The U.S. Postal Service is moving towards a more centralized delivery, in which residents pick up their own mail from clusters of mail boxes located in their neighborhood.

Local postmasters are sending hundreds of letters to fast-growing communities, warning that mail will be delivered to cluster boxes in new developments.

The move could save the U.S. Postal Service up to $4.5 billion a year.

Union officials argue the proposal would be disruptive for the elderly and the disabled.
