Fugitive sex offender surrenders to police

A sex offender who slipped off the radar is back after seeing himself on NewsChannel 9’s On the Lookout.
Syracuse (WSYR-TV) – A sex offender who slipped off the radar is back after seeing himself on NewsChannel 9’s On the Lookout.

43-year-old Enmon Thomas was convicted in 2004 of raping a 12-year-old girl.

He was placed on 10 years probation, but could not be found at the address he was listed on in the New York State Online Sex Offender Registry.

Police contacted NewsChannel 9 and asked viewers be "On the Lookout" for him.

Sex offender no longer at address listed: Fugitive of the Week
Feb. 4, 2013

Syracuse (WSYR-TV) -- The names, faces and addresses of sex offenders are posted online so families can find out whether a sexual predator has moved into their neighborhood. But if you were to look up this week’s fugitive on the state’s sex offender registry, there’s an important piece of information that’s wrong – his current address.

The New York State Online Sex Offender Registry says 43-year-old Enmon Thomas raped a 12-year-old girl. He was convicted in 2004 and placed on 10 years probation, but he’s no longer at the address that is listed.

“When someone goes missing deliberately off that, certainly our suspicions are heightened that they are possibly back up to criminal behavior,” said Sgt. John Savage with the Syracuse Police Warrant Squad.

Thomas is a level two sex offender – meaning the risk of a repeat sexual offense is moderate.

Thomas is 5’10” tall and 290 pounds.

“There are some people saying that he’s in the area, some people are saying he left the area. We don’t have any indications that he’s left the Syracuse area,” Sgt. Savage continued.

If you know where Thomas is, call the Syracuse Police Warrant Squad tip line at 442-5230. All calls will be kept confidential.

While it’s informative to know where sex offenders are in your neighborhood, experts will tell you that it’s more important that you have background checks done on anyone who provides services for your children. This can include caregivers, instructors or domestic help. Anyone working with or around children should be required to have a background check.
