Showers tonight but sun returns Friday

(Thursday Evening, April 25, 2013) A few showers will move into central New York tonight. The showers should end by daybreak Friday and sunshine will return quickly during the day. In spite of the sun, it will be another cool day with temperatures in the 50s.
A cold front will sweep across central New York tonight. The air preceding the front is rather dry which is typically not a good set up for showers, however, a small but potent disturbance in the jet stream winds aloft will track northeast from the Great Lakes and clip us the first half of the night. This will help us overcome the lack of moisture to cause some showers, maybe even a rumble of thunder north and west of Syracuse. Overnight, as we cool behind the cold front, we think some wet snow could mix in with the rain showers. We aren’t expecting an accumulation and most, if not all, of the showers will be done by daybreak Friday.

A new area of high pressure will build into central New York Friday behind Thursday night’s cold front so we will quickly return to sunny skies. This high pressure system is the center of a reinforcing cool air mass so we expect temperatures on Friday to be similar to what we saw this afternoon.

The weekend still looks relatively quiet across central New York. A separate disturbance will track to our north early Saturday and the moisture associated with that feature may lead to a cloudy start to the day but we would expect sun shine to break through by midday. Through the weekend there will be a warming trend and we could end up close to 70 by later Sunday.

There are some question marks as we head into the start of next week. The forecast weather maps show high pressure anchored up over New England during this time extending south along the East Coast. Normally this would be a set up for sunny dry weather but our computer models are also showing some moisture rotating around the edge of this high from the Southeast then back north toward us. For this reason, we have some showers in the forecast for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. The good news is that in spite the threat for some rain, our temperatures should be a bit above normal through this time.
