Son charged with setting fire in Mattydale that killed his elderly father

A Salina man who survived a fire in Mattydale that killed his elderly father has been charged with murder and arson.

Mattydale (WSYR-TV) – A Salina man who survived a fire in Mattydale that killed his elderly father has been charged with murder and arson.

Robert K. Teachout, 56, of Plymouth Avenue was charged with second degree murder and second degree arson, the Onondaga County Sheriff’s Office said.

Robert Y. Teachout, 83, was found dead in his home at 225 Garden City Dr.

The fire broke out just before 6:00 a.m. on Friday and the home was destroyed in the fire.

The victim’s son was staying at the home, according to Sheriff Kevin Walsh.

The younger Teachout was being treated for smoke inhalation at the hospital where he was arraigned on the charges, according to the sheriff’s office.

He is now in custody at the Onondaga County Justice Center.

Teachout is being held without bail and is scheduled to appear in court on Sept. 26.
