At least three people were killed and seven hurt, according to CNN, which cited the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council.

More than 100,000 people took refuge as the typhoon began making its way into the island nation.

According to the cable news network, Typhoon Haiyan featured sustained winds of 315 kph (195 mph) and gusts as strong as 380 kph (235 mph).

They said it would take further analysis to determine whether it was the strongest storm on record.
