Texas (CNN/WSYR-TV) -- Rescue workers say there are a number of fatalities and nearly 200 people hurt after an explosion at a fertilizer plant near Waco, Texas.

Officials say some firefighters are still unaccounted for at the scene of the incident.

The explosion reportedly occurred before 9 p.m. on Wednesday and, according to reports, a huge plume of smoke could be seen rising into the air.

The plant is located 20 miles north of Waco, the report said. A nearby school and apartment building were destroyed.

A nursing home located near the plant also caught fire due to the explosion.

Between 75 and 100 homes and buildings near the plant in the town of West, Texas have also been destroyed.

McLennan County Sheriff Parnell McNamara told KWTX that the area looked like a war zone.

A triage area has been set up at a nearby high school to treat those who were injured in the explosion.

As many as a dozen helicopters were sent to the area and at least two dozen ambulances were called to the scene.

Authorities say most of the injuries resulted from debris thrown from the blast, including glass, doors, and other shrapnel.

Evacuations within a one mile radius of the explosion were underway, KWTX reports.

The explosion also knocked out power to a large portion of the area. At least a thousand customers were affected.
