10-digit dialing underway for CNY and surrounding regions

WSYR-TV - You now will have to dial the full 10 digit number, including the area code— even when making local calls.

If you don't dial all 10 digits, your call will not go through and you'll be asked to hang up and dial again. The change comes ahead of the new 680 area code, which will begin next month.

It will join the 315 in an 18-county area stretching from south of Syracuse to the Canadian border.

The changes will not impact you dialing 911.

A new area code is coming to the area because there are no more 315 numbers left.

You might start seeing the word overlay on your phone bill— that’s a second area code for the same region.

If you currently have a 315 area code, that won’t change. The only thing that will change is now you have to always include the area code when you make calls.
