3-year-old girl dies after being hit by car in Eastwood church parking lot

Police say her father, an off-duty firefighter, was taking the girl to daycare

A 3-year-old girl has been killed in a crash in an Eastwood Church parking lot. Police say her father, an off-duty firefighter, was dropping the girl off at daycare.

Crews were called to the Eastwood Baptist Church along James Street, near Homecroft Road, just before 9:10 a.m. Wednesday.

The Syracuse Police Department says the incident involved an SUV and 2 pedestrians, the child and her father.

According to police, they were struck while crossing the parking lot, by another parent dropping off their child.

The father is stable at Upstate University Hospital. His colleagues at the fire department spent the day by his side.

Paul Motondo, President of the Syracuse Firefighters Association Local 280, said crews are putting together a plan to offer support to the family.

"There has been personnel, members of Local 280 and the Chief's office alongside the family every step of the way. Local 280 has reached out to the family again and is going to provide anything that is needed to get them through this. This affects every single one of us," Motondo said.

Police say the woman driving the SUV was also taken to the hospital. Though, they did not release details about her condition as the investigation continues.
