4 charged with attempted murder, kidnapping in Utica shooting

UTICA, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) - Four teens have been charged with attempted murder for their alleged involvement in shooting a man as he attempted to flee their captivity.

On Jan. 2, Utica Police responded to Oneida Street for a shooting investigation.

During the investigation, police determined that the 20-year-old victim was taken from a location at gunpoint against his will and brought to the area of the 1400 block of Oneida St.

At that time, still at gunpoint he felt that his life was in immediate danger and decided that he would attempt to flee, according to police. 

As he ran away from his alleged captors, he was shot at several times. He sustained a gunshot wound to the midsection

Those arrested were 19-year-old Andre Baptisti, of Utica, 19-year-old Ricky Woods, of Yorkville, 17-year-old Jahmel Howard, of Utica, and 17-year-old Demarkus Smith, also of Utica.

All four were charged with second-degree attempted murder, second-degree kidnapping and fourth-degree conspiracy, all felonies.

Baptisti was additionally charged with first-degree criminal use of a firearm and second-degree criminal possession of a weapon, felonies.
