Apple picking season returns on Friday

LAFAYETTE, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) - It may be a little cooler than normal for this time of year – but these chilly nights are definitely helping the apple crop.

And the cooler temperatures may have many Central New Yorkers thinking of apple picking.

Pick-your-own-apples starts Friday at Beak and Skiff in LaFayette – and NewsChannel 9 went to the orchard to see what this year’s crop looks like.

Beak and Skiff Fresh Fruit Division General Manager Peter Fleckenstein says visitors to the orchard are in for a treat.

"This year is just more of a return to normal, apples will taste basically how you remember them to taste for the last 10, 15 years, however high sugar varieties, I'm talking about natural sugars, Gala, Honeycrisp, Fuji will be as sweet as they've always been,” he said.
