Athlete of the Week: Liverpool's Bryce Mills

LIVERPOOL, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) - Our latest Athlete of the Week is coming back to Liverpool from Missouri where he just won a national championship.

This all started for Bryce Mills when he began taking karate lessons at a young age. Now, he’s a Silver Gloves boxing champion at just 15 years old.

"Not a lot of people have done it. I was just really overwhelmed. I watched everyone have success over here and I figured ‘why not me?’ I worked my butt off and trained really hard. I ended up having success,” Bryce said.

Winning is all the Bryce Mills has done— he currently holds two youth kicking boxing titles and has won over a half dozen championships in his young career.

"He is an amazing kid. I mean, there is not much else to say but ‘wow.’ He listens. He is coachable. Not many people are coachable, much less kids his age,” his head coach AJ Andrello said.

“You just have to stay calm. It is different when you got a guy across from you trying to do some damage. You get used to it and you get calm so when you step in the ring you are prepared," Bryce said.

Six days a week, Mills is in the gym working on his craft, sometimes up to four hours a day.  It’s a drive that pushes him to be the best that he can be.

“I just want to be the best that I can be.  If that means going to the UFC and winning the UFC belt, if that means going boxing and winning the WBC World Championship, or if that means going kickboxing and winning the glory title, I am up for anything. I am just ready to see where this journey is going to take me,” Mills said.
