Ben Walsh wins race for Syracuse mayor

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) - Independent Ben Walsh has done the improbable – defeated a Democrat in a City of Syracuse mayoral election.

Walsh polled at 54 percent, with strongest opponent Democrat Juanita Perez Williams polling in at 38 percent.

Walsh is the son of former Congressman Jim Walsh and the grandson of former Mayor William Walsh.

Walsh comes from a family of Republicans.

He’s the first non-Democrat elected mayor since Roy Bernardi.

Walsh says he prides himself on community development, spending years as head of community development for the city of Syracuse.

He was also a driving force behind the redevelopment of the Hotel Syracuse.

Walsh has branded himself as the candidate of change running on the Reform and Independence party lines.
