Bikes and donations needed to make CNY Family Bike Giveaway a success

Organizers of the 19th annual CNY Family Bike Giveaway hope to distribute 2,500 bicycles to kids and their parents this weekend.

They are short by about 450 bikes, and are still looking to collect $1,500 in donations.

"We give them away until they're all gone,” says organizer Jan Maloff. “Believe it or not, 2,500 bikes will disappear in about two hours."

The giveaway is Saturday, December 24 at Fowler High School. The giveaway starts at 10 a.m.

Bill Smith was one of several people bringing in a bike to donate on Monday morning.

The bicycle belonged to his daughter, but has never been used in the 20 years he’s had it.

“I decided it could be better used by a mother and a grown up child,” Smith said. “It’s a great opportunity to help support the community. I'm looking around the building here and I'm amazed by the operation and the number of bikes that are here."

More than 40 people poured in over the weekend to help bring the older bikes back to life.

Maloff says many of the volunteers who help repair the donated gifts get as much out of the giveaway as those receiving the wheels.

“People often ask me, how do you feel giving a bike to a child? I feel great, but even more than that I enjoy watching people get involved and helping their community,” Maloff says.

People can bring their bikes or donations to the Dairy Cattle Building at the NYS Fairgrounds any day this week through Thursday, between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m.

Organizers will accept donations until about 10 p.m. on Thursday, the day before the bikes are taken over to Fowler High School.

Families do not need to pre-register for the giveaway, but parents do need to bring their children to the school on Saturday so they can be properly fitted for their bikes.

To get more information about donating, call Jan Maloff at (315) 446-7570. If the call goes through to Maloff's funeral home, he encourages people to leave a message so that he can return it at a later time.

Cash and checks made out to ‘CNY Family Bike’ will be accepted.
