BINGHAMTON, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) - A Binghamton University freshman has died after falling from a fourth-floor balcony outside a party at a frat house, according to Binghamton Police.
Police say 18-year-old Conor Donnelly was attempting to climb to a third floor balcony from the fourth floor balcony at a house party hosted by Alpha Sigma Phi on Saturday when he fell.
Autopsy reports indicate that alcohol was a contributing factor.
He was in the process of pledging to Alpha Sigma Phi’s fraternity.
Donnelly’s death was ruled accidental, and there was no evidence that his death was the result of hazing, police say.
The school released the following statement:
Binghamton University President Harvey Stenger is saddened to announce that Conor Donnelly, a Binghamton University freshman from Pearl River, N.Y., died accidentally Saturday, March 18, while off campus. Binghamton Police are investigating and no other details are available at this time.
It is always difficult to lose someone, Stenger said, but it is especially difficult to lose a young member of our campus community so suddenly.
Staff from the University Counseling Center (UCC) is available in UU-215 today for students who are affected by this death and wish to speak with someone. During normal business hours, the UCC can be reached by calling 607-777-2772.
Alpha Sigma Phi also released a statement:
Alpha Sigma Phi is very saddened to learn of the passing of Conor Donnelly, and we extend our deepest sympathies to his family and friends.
While police have determined his death to be an accident, we will continue to provide our full cooperation during the ongoing investigation.
Additionally, a senior Alpha Sigma Phi staff member is now in Binghamton to provide support to members after the loss of their friend.
