MATTYDALE, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) - As soon as the work was completed in the southbound lanes of the I-81 bridge in Mattydale, viewers called NewsChannel 9 saying contractors did a poor job and the surface was very rough-- worse before the work.
The State DOT confirms the contractor chose a deck refinishing method that resulted in a less than smooth surface.
It was very evident to everyone riding over it that it was far bumpier than it should have been.
The DOT confirms the contractor smoothed out the pavement and other sections still closed, will get the same surface treatment before opening.
Overall, work affecting I-81 traffic will be completed this season and work down below, on the concrete substructure, will likely go into next season.
