California 7-year-old uses recycling to save $10K for college

SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO, Calif. (WSYR-TV) - A 7-year-old in California is already working his way through college – by recycling.

Ryan Hickman has saved $10,000 since he started his Orange County business at the age of 3 and a half.

Hickman had help from his family and friends when he started out – and now he has his own business, Ryan’s Recycling.

Ryan told KABC in Los Angeles that he’s recycled 200,000 cans and bottles over the lest several years.

In addition to saving money for college, the boy sells t-shirts, donating the proceeds to the Pacific Marine Mammal Center in Laguna Beach.

He hopes that in addition to saving for his education, he can convert some of the money into capital to invest in a garbage truck.
