Canastota pair accused of extorting more than $100K from elderly victim

EAST SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) - A Canastota couple is under arrest for allegedly concocting a phony scheme involving the mob in order to steal more than $100,000 from an elderly East Syracuse victim.

58-year-old Kenneth Bennett and 47-year-old Michelle Beck were charged with second-degree grand larceny, and jailed in lieu of $5,000 cash bail or $10,000 bond.

Investigators say Bennett was a handy man for the victim, and befriended him.

They say Bennett told the victim that he was involved in the mafia and that he owed them money.

Bennett allegedly asked the victim for loans to help pay off his fake debts.

Beck would also pose as a mobster and call the victim, saying they would hurt him if he didn’t pay up.

They were arrested on Sept. 28 and arraigned in Town of DeWitt Court.
