Icicles hanging from buildings and homes are usually a sign of poor insulation and ventilation in the attic.
If you have icicles on your home - they aren't necessarily causing damage - but it could be a sign of an ice back up and experts say that is something that needs to be dealt with.
“Underneath your overhangs, if you see icicles in the middle of that area - it hasn't entered your house yet, but you are getting six inches of back up - and that can create a mold and mildew issue as well,” Ed Purcell with EJ’s Contractors CNY Inc. said.
“If it's that severe, we need to take a sledge hammer - very carefully and create channels so when the snow and ice does melt it can alleviate off the roof and not go into your house.”
This time of year, roofing companies respond to many calls for snow and ice removal.
Experts say shoveling snow off your roof and removing icicles can help you avoid a costly problem down the road.
