Cornell student charged with hate crime for alleged September assault

ITHACA, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) - A 19-year-old Cornell student has been charged with a hate crime for allegedly beating a black student back in September.

According to court documents, John Greenwood “intentionally selected the person against whom the offense was committed in whole or substantial part because of a belief or perception regarding the victim’s race, color, national origin and/or ancestry.”

Police say Greenwood punched the victim in the face on Sept. 15 in the Collgetown section of Ithaca, around 1:15 a.m.

Racial slurs were yelled during a fight and “several” people involved were Cornell students.

No one was seriously hurt.

Greenwood has been charted with third-degree attempted assault as a hate crime, second-degree aggravated harassment and fourth-degree criminal mischief.
