Cell Phones for Soldiers campaign underway; donations needed

A special program that helps soldiers stay in touch with their families and friends at home is underway.
Syracuse (WSYR-TV) – A special program that helps soldiers stay in touch with their families and friends at home is underway.

State Senator John DeFrancisco is trying to promote the annual Cell Phones for Soldiers Program, which provides pre-paid calling cards for American servicemen and women.

The cards are paid for by proceeds from recycled cell phones. For every donated phone, the campaign generates two 60-minute international calling cards.

“Thanks to the generosity of Central New Yorkers, we collected more than 900 used cell phones last year, which provided our soldiers with about 1,800 hours of free talk time,” said DeFrancisco, an Air Force veteran. “Over the last five years, we have collected nearly 5,000 cellular phones. I know we can keep this momentum going.”

The drive will continue through mid-January.

To find out more about the program, call the Senator’s office at (315) 428-7632 and on his website.
