Syracuse (WSYR-TV) - Fundraising to build a new complex for the Syracuse Challengers Baseball league is ongoing and organizers are confident that the grants they will need to build it are within reach.

The league has raised about $1 million for the project, but they need to more than double that amount.

They’re confident that they can raise another $1.5 million.

Then, they believe, the remaining $9 million needed for the stadium can be obtained through grants and bonds.

The complex is meant to give the Challengers their very own stadium.

The group includes approximately 200 kids who have special needs.

The league currently plays at an open Little League field, but finding space can be a problem.

The new complex would include other fields for lacrosse, soccer, and football – along with spots for basketball and volleyball – all of which would be handicapped accessible.

"At the same time, that complex is going to provide the community with a state of the art championship level facility that will allow us to bring in tournaments from not only all over the state but from all over the northeast,” said Syracuse Challengers Program Director Dom Cambareri.

The Syracuse Challengers will play at NBT Bank Stadium on Thursday from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m.

More information on the project is available on the Challengers: Field of Dreams website.
