Dale Earnhardt Jr. to retire after 2017 season

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) - One of racing’s most famous names will soon leave the sport.

Hendrick Motorsports announced on Tuesday that Dale Earnhardt Jr. will retire from NASCAR after the 2017 season.

The 42-year-old, who picked up the sport’s banner after his father died tragically in 2001, Earnhardt Jr. has recorded 26 race wins, including two Daytona 500 victories.

Hendrick Motorsports has not yet announced a replacement.
