Empire Brewing Company breaks ground on brewery in Cazenovia

Cazenovia (WSYR-TV) - The Empire Brewing Company broke ground on its new farmstead brewery in Cazenovia Friday.

The project is part of Governor Andrew Cuomo's Start Up New York initiative, which creates tax free zones across the state for new and expanding businesses.

"It's a full working agritourism type of project, people will actually be able to smell the hops, taste the barley, see how it's grown," said Dave Katleski with Empire Brewing Company. "They will have a full tutorial on how beer is made and then sample the product at the end."

There will be a tasting room, restaurant, and gift shop.

Empire says it could be the largest farm brewery in the state.

Katleski says they wanted to tap into opportunities New York was offering.

"We had a really receptive Albany to work with to make sure we could pull this off," he said.

"He had offers from Virginia and North Carolina but he wanted to stay in New York but building a building is expensive so the tax free program will allow him to reduce his operating costs for those 10 years so he can advertise that investment and he's on solid financial footing on the back end," said Leslie Whatley with Start Up NY.

Empire is hoping to have the brewery open by the end of the year.
