Extraordinary Places: Taughannock Falls

ITHACA, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) - Ithaca is Gorges-- it’s a slogan that has been around for decades, but  what's behind it?

There are more than 150 waterfalls within 10 miles of Downtown Ithaca, but Taughannock Falls State Park may be the most Extraordinary.

Many may think that Niagara Falls is New York’s tallest waterfall, but Taughannock Falls plunges 215 feet-- three stories higher than Niagara Falls.

You can get great views of the falls from above, but one of the best places to experience it is from below, taking the gorge trail. It's an easy hike that winds through the woods along a creek where you can stop for a swim.

The falls carve through layers of sandstone, shale and limestone that were once the bed of an ancient sea.

Along with hiking trails and the falls, Taughannock Falls State Park has access to Cayuga Lake with a beach and boat launch.

The park is open year-round.
