Feds: Syracuse man stole $3.6M from city of Miami Beach bank account to buy NFL tickets

MIAMI BEACH, Fl (WSYR-TV) - A Syracuse man is facing federal charges— accused of stealing $3.6 million from the City of Miami Beach in Florida to buy NFL tickets.

According to a criminal complaint, 44-year-old David Miller electronically stole the money from the city's bank account from July to October of last year. He’s charged with bank fraud and identity theft.

The series of unauthorized transactions from the account with Suntrust Bank happened over that period of time; that was money generated from permit fees and water bills that was supposed to pay the city's own bills.

Two city employees resigned— not because they caused the problem, but because the city manager says the workers should have discovered the incident much sooner.

“Still to this day, I scratch my head how that individual, over the course of five months, didn't see dozens of transactions amounting to $3.6 million. I don't understand, that's your job, how you miss that?” said Miami Beach City Manager Jimmy Morales.

Miller is being held in the Onondaga County Jail on an unrelated identity theft charge.
