Fulton (WSYR-TV) - Whether it's hurrying to neighborhoods to catch a burglar or put out a fire, dangerous encounters are part of the job for first responders.

On Wednesday night in Fulton, people gathered to honor the first responders who put themselves in harms way.

Their quick actions save lives as Jennifer O’Neil can attest.

Last summer, when Jennifer’s 10-year-old son Kiernan noticed his mother wasn't moving or breathing, he ran to a neighbor’s house to call 911.

Kiernan was recognized with the Civilian Service Award and a very grateful mother and son got the chance to thank the rescuers who helped her breath again.

“Tonight was the first time I met everybody and if it wasn't for them I wouldn't be here,” Jennifer said.

During the annual award ceremony, Christopher Adkins was named Firefighter of the Year and Officer Christopher Jones named the Police Officer of the Year.
