Funeral celebrates the life of Bishop Moynihan

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) - The Roman Catholic Diocese of Syracuse held a Mass of Christian Burial to celebrate the life of Bishop James Moynihan – who presided over one of the most turbulent periods in the church’s history.

Current Bishop Robert Cunningham celebrated the Mass – with Father Cliff Auth offering the homily.

Bishop Moynihan, a Rochester native, served in Syracuse from 1995 to 2009.

In 2003, the church was confronted with the priest sex abuse crisis.

In October, 2003, he publicly apologized for the harm caused to victims of sexual abuse and asked any individual who had been harmed to report their abuse.

Bishop Moynihan also traveled to the Vatican for the Beatification of Blessed Marianne Cope - who was later canonized as Saint Marianne Cope, the diocese's first saint.
