Syracuse (WSYR-TV) - We’ve all been there… driving along the highway and come to a sudden stop as cars and trucks are lined up waiting geese to cross the street.

As frustrating as it is, it's required.

Not stopping and hitting the geese will cost you. The fine could run you over $300.

Harassing them by chasing them away is also against the law.

Ron Giegerich, a professor at SUNY-ESF, says don’t expect a permanent migration either.

“They’re raised in the local area they stay in the local area,” explained Giegerich.

He says New York has a hunting season in September to try and lower the population, which sits at about a quarter of a million.
