The culprit, a lumbering storm in the nation's heartland. Here's a map of the jet stream valid Tuesday morning. The storm is located over Iowa. Winds flow counterclockwise around the low. That means a south wind delivering plenty of moisture our way through the week.
The heaviest rainfall looks like it will occur Tuesday and Wednesday. After Wednesday, some dry air will circulate around the storm, and should give us some breaks of sun Thursday.
While rain is in the forecast into the weekend, it should be noted that after Wednesday of this week, the showers will become more scattered or broken up. Also, the chances for rain will occur primarily in the afternoon, after the atmosphere gets a chance to heat up.
Here's the forecast of total rainfall over the next 5 days. It looks like a solid 1-2" of rain is likely, by the weekend.
