Great weather to view the Orionid Meteor Showers this weekend

Orionid Meteor Shower 2017 peaks Friday-Sunday

SYRACUSE (WSYR-TV) - Get the coffee ready this weekend, star gazers!

Central New Yorkers will have some of the best weather to see "shooting stars", or the Orionid Meteor shower.

The new moon and a mainly clear sky will make for great viewing weather of the Orionid Meteor shower this weekend.

The Orionid meteors occur around this time every year when Earth travels through debris left over from Halley's Comet, according to NASA.

As many as 20 meteors or more per hour can be seen during its peak, which is now until early Sunday morning October 22nd.

The best time to view the meteors is around 2am.

This meteor shower is called the Orionids because they radiate near the constellation Orion, specifically near its "sword", a little north of Orion's shoulder, or the star Betelgeuse.
