HAZMAT crews called to Syracuse office building

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) - Fire and HAZMAT crews have been called to an office building in the City of Syracuse for a hazardous materials call.

Crews got a call about people having trouble breathing on the third floor in the conference room of one of the businesses.

Investigators believe that the cause of the breathing troubles was from someone's personal protection device that had activated.

It may be pepper spray, investigators say, but they were unable to pinpoint it for sure.

Five people were sent to the hospital.

The call went out around 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday to the 600 block of Erie Boulevard West.

Part of the building was evacuated so firefighters could investigate.

The scene has since been cleared out and firefighters deemed it safe for people to enter the building.
