Auburn (WSYR-TV) –Auburn officials have approved a ban on smoking in public housing within the city.

Officials voted 6-1 in favor of the ban during a Monday meeting at the Auburn Housing Authority offices.

The ban will affect residents in the Melone Village and Olympia Terrace complexes.

A third complex – Brogan Manor – is undergoing renovations.

As new apartments at Brogan Manor become available, tenants will sign new leases stipulating that there is no smoking indoors.

Residents are still permitted to smoke outside the buildings.

Toledo and Houston have similar bans in place, as does the state of Maine.
