200 years later, celebrations mark anniversary of Erie Canal

ROME (WSYR-TV) - Hundreds of people gathered in Rome's Bellamy Harbor park on Saturday to mark the 200th anniversary of the Erie Canal. 

Rome is the birthplace of the canal, which served as an integral "superhighway" to connect much of Upstate New York. 

"This is not something we just read about in the history books, but it's thriving it's alive its vibrant," John Callaghan, the deputy director of New York's Canal Corporation, said. 

At the celebration, actors re-enacted the groundbreaking of the project and several historic boats where available for tours. 

Fireworks will cap of the celebration at 9:45 p.m. on Saturday.
