Sunday was opening day of the 2017 World Canals Conference happening in Syracuse! It's also the 200th anniversary of the Erie Canal.
That's the main reason Syracuse was chosen as the host city for the conference this year. The event brings canal experts from across the globe together to discuss the latest waterway technology and the economic impact of canals.
Past conferences have been held in France, Poland and Thailand.
"We've been working on this for three years. We actually bid to win this conference in 2014, so it's been three years of planning. We expect about 400 delegates from all over, throughout the five days," said Brian Stratton, director of the New York State Canal Corporation.
Stratton added that there are big plans for the Erie Canal system, set to be revealed this week.
Events are planned for this week to celebrate the big 200th anniversary and the 2017 conference.
