5 people rescued from roof of burning home in Rome

ROME (WSYR-TV) - A fire trapped several people on the second story of a Rome home Saturday night.

According to the Rome Fire Department, a structure fire was reported at 404 W. Thomas Street just before midnight.

When firefighters arrived on scene, they found smoke coming out of the front door and the second floor window.

Officials say several police officers and neighbors were assisting people off the roof using ladders.

A neighbor and police officer first tried putting out the fire in the stairway using portable extinguishers before the remaining fire was quickly put out with a hose line, officials said.

Two women that were rescued from the roof were transported to Rome Hospital. They were treated for smoke inhalation and then released.

At this time, the extent of damage and the cause of the fire is unknown.
