DA: 10-year-old used dad's illegal gun to kill 9-year-old brother on Hartson Street

SYRACUSE (WSYR-TV) - The Onondaga County District Attorney tells NewsChannel 9 a father's illegal handgun was the weapon used by a 10-year-old to shoot and kill his 8-year old brother.

DA Bill Fitzpatrick believes the shooting was an accident, but his office is looking into possible charges against both the 10-year-old and the boys' parents.

Police have named the victim as 8-year-old Shaleek Carrears, but have not yet commented on the suspected shooter.

Carrears was an incoming second-grader at Porter Elementary in the Syracuse City School District.

An autopsy is being done by the Onondaga County Medical Examiner, which will confirm if the shooting was an accident.

The shooting happened inside a home at 107 Hartson Street, at 2:37 Monday morning.

Ambulance and rescue personnel arrived soon after, but the boy died from his injuries a short time later.

The 9mm Glock was found at the scene by detectives. Police will run the weapon through a database to see if it was used in any other crimes.

The investigation continues, but police are asking anyone with information to call Syracuse Police at (315) 442-5222.
