American Legion Dept. of New York elects first woman commander

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) - The American Legion Department of New York will be swearing in their first woman commander on Saturday.

Rena Nessler will be sworn in at a ceremony at 10 the Oncenter.

The incoming commander is a Navy Veteran who joined the American Legion in 1980 after serving honorably during the Vietnam era.

She is a 37-year member of American Legion Winnek Post 396 in Geneva, New York where she held several Post and District Leadership positions.

The Department Commander leads the American Legion throughout the entire state. There are more than 113,000 Legionnaires and 900 posts throughout New York.
