An unexpected takeaway from the kitchen at LaFayette's Apple Festival

LAFAYETTE (WSYR-TV) - Thousands of people made their way to LaFayette on Saturday to get their helping of apple goodies from pies to fritters.

But served alongside the treats this year, the cooks found a dose of community at St. Joseph's Church.

Many have spent decades volunteering with the church, with proceeds eventually trickling down to their outreach efforts.

Still, running a parish isn't always easy. Human-nature can get in the way sometimes with many of the volunteers serving on various committees. But, the apple festival is the one event each year that brings everyone together.

"This event is the only time of the year we all agree on anything," Tom Scofield, one of the volunteers at the festival, said with a smile.

Each year, it gives them a chance to just focus on apples. And there might be a takeaway there for everyone.

"If we were to do that on a national level, healthcare wouldn't be an issue, nor would civil defense. or guns," Scofield said.

The LaFayette Apple Festival ends Sunday at 5 p.m.
