Police identify body recovered from the Owasco River

AUBURN (WSYR-TV) - The Chief of the Auburn Fire Department says a woman's body was recovered from the Owasco River Sunday.

Police have identified the woman as 47-year-old Sherry Stephenson.

Officers say Stephenson was pronounced dead at the scene, however, they do not suspect foul play.

She was pulled from the water around 8:15 p.m., about 500 feet downstream near the Aurelius Street Bridge.

Crews were called to the Division Street bridge around 7:00 p.m.

The team was assisted by Onondaga County Air 1. No one had to enter the water, but the cold water did play a factor in the rescue.

Auburn's Police Chief confirms they are handling the investigation and say they expect to release more information Monday.

Both the Division and Aurelius Street bridges were both closed while crews were searching the water. They have since been reopened.
