Better Business Bureau warning smokers about online cigarette scams

Tips to follow before you make a purchase

SYRACUSE (WSYR-TV) - You might get more for your money buying items online, but those savings could also be a scam. The Better Business Bureau is warning smokers that online cigarette sales at a cheaper price may be a ploy.

Smoking can be an expensive habit -- costing you a healthy lifestyle and in some cases, more money than expected.

Scammers posing as online cigarette sellers may appear to offer a great deal -- often an international company with packs listed at half price.

You purchase a few cartons, but before you pay, the Better Business Bureau says make sure it's not a scam.

Online sales scammers could end up taking your money and your cigarettes never arrive.

One way to improve your odds is to shop around. Comparing prices on reputable websites is one way to gauge if a price is too good to be true.

Another tip, avoid pre-paid cards and wiring money online. There's no way to recoup your losses, unlike credit cards which often have built in fraud protection.

If you're still unsure, check the company's history -- if other people are giving it bad reviews, it may be a red flag.
