Cayuga County Sheriff warns of scammers impersonating deputies

AUBURN (WSYR-TV) - The Cayuga County Sheriff's office is warning seniors of a phone scam involving people impersonating deputies and asking for money.

The scammers ask for a prepaid Visa card to settle a court-ordered judgment in order to avoid further legal action against the victim.

"I would like to be the person that personally is arresting this person," Sheriff David Gould said. "It's taking advantage of people who don't know what the law is or how law enforcement handles these complaints."

Gould said law enforcement will never call asking for money.

If someone receives a call like this, they should call 911, he added.

Seneca, Wayne, and Oneida have been among the other counties to have report a similar scam.
