WSYR-TV - The Syracuse Chiefs announced the name of the team for the “What If” Night. The Chiefs will transform into the Syracuse Salt Potatoes for the game on Saturday, August 5th versus the Rochester Red Wings. The team will wear specialty Salt Potatoes jerseys and hats on the field that day.
Salt Potatoes merchandise will also be available in the Whistlestop Souvenir Store. The Super Saturday giveaway on August 5th will be a replica Salt Potatoes jersey for the first 1000 fans and will conclude with post-game fireworks!
In March, the Chiefs began talking to fans about what name they would assign the Chiefs, given the chance. Fans turned in hundreds of name suggestions based on what Central New York means to them.
The “What If” Night promotion is a way for the Chiefs to celebrate a piece of Central New York culture. Salt potatoes are a regional staple to CNY families, especially during the summer months.
Fans will be asked to participate in a number of social media contests to help finalize the details for “What If” Night on August 5th. The contests will allow the fans to decide what special salt potato-themed foods will be featured that night, what on-field games will be played, and more.
“Syracuse is the Salt City, so what better way to represent our city than to re-name the team the Salt Potatoes for a day,” said Jason Smorol, general manager. “We are proud to be from Central New York and this is a fun, unique way to represent our history."
Super Packs are available for “What If” Night for $60. Super Packs include (4) 200-level reserved box tickets, 4 hot dogs, 4 sodas, a tub of popcorn, 4 guaranteed giveaways and a coupon to the Whistlestop Souvenir store. Add-on tickets are available. Fans who purchase a Super Pack for “What If” Night are guaranteed to receive a replica Salt Potatoes jersey.
