CNY mowing company still growing after 30 years

VERNON, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) - The Ferris lawn mowing company has been around since 1909, starting in Vernon as a company that only made farm equipment— they continued to do so for the next 80 years.

"We were actually building a mini-manure spreader the first day I started.  My job was to put slats in the manure spreaders,” said Bill Shea, vice president of commercial sales.

Dairy farming had some hard time in the early 80's, so the Ferris company decided to diversify the business.

They decided to try the lawn mower market in 1986.

While they said it was a tough transition at first, but now their red mowers are famous in the area.

The company that started making about 125 lawn mowers a year now has about 250 a day rolling off three different assembly lines, getting a full check and calibration before they're sent out the door to lawns all across the globe to get the Ferris treatment from machines made in Central New York.

About a decade ago, Ferris took over a warehouse on the Old Oneida Limited Campus in Sherrill as it continued to expand.  The company ships its lawn mowers all over the country, Europe and Australia.
