CNY woman trying to reach husband, two friends on Puerto Rican island

SYRACUSE (WSYR-TV) - A Central New York woman is still trying to reach her husband and two friends that live on Vieques, a small Puerto Rican island.

Linda Quinn moved to Vieques with her husband Jim three years ago after they both retired from jobs in Central New York, following their two friends Margo and Joe who had already moved there from Syracuse.

Quinn returns to Syracuse every summer to visit her mother and missed the storm, unlike her three loved ones. The Syracuse native hasn't spoken to them since Hurricane Maria hit.

"There's a couple of satellite phones that people have access to but they've located 54 people for sure but there are 9,000 people on the island," said Quinn.

In addition to limited communication for those on the island, Quinn says the airport is temporarily shutdown because of damage and supplies like gas, food and water have run dry.

"We're looking into our own planes, whatever we can," explained Quinn. "If anyone knows anyone in the armed forces, FEMA, or Red Cross, to get supplies we'd appreciate your call."

If you'd like to help you can email Linda at or contact her on Facebook.

There is also a GoFundme set up by a magazine editor on the island for supplies that can be found here.
