Community looks to name bridge after Trooper Joel Davis

THERESA, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) - Friends, family and law enforcement came together on Thursday to honor Trooper Joel Davis, who was shot and killed three weeks ago while responding to a domestic call in Jefferson County.

The community gathered just underneath the Route 26 bridge in the Village of Theresa to announce plans to name the bridge in honor of Trooper Davis.

“The bridge here is not previously named, it's just the state Route 26 bridge. It kind of has some importance because it crosses the Indian River. It’s the main Route between Theresa and Philadelphia. Joel’s raised in Philadelphia, it's where his parents live and Theresa, unfortunately, is where he passed away. It kind of brings those two communities together,” said Jonathan Walker, the Mayor of Theresa.

The blue ribbon hangs on the bridge as a reminder of the man who made such a lasting impact on the community.

Legislation to change the name will be brought before state Legislatures next session.
